Student Spotlight – Fall 2017 – Alecia Crockett
What area are you specializing in within Visual Communications? Photography
What inspired you to pursue a career in Visual Communications? I have always been interested in photography because a photograph is like a book, when you pick up an image and look at it it takes you to another place and time, you are now seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.
When will you graduate? What do you plan to do after graduation? Spring of 2017, I plan on attending a four year college, such as IUSB, and get my bachelors degree in teaching.
What is/was your favorite class and why? Fine Art was my favorite class because it allowed me to gain hands on experience with film, and I got the chance to really express myself through my photos.
What high school did you attend and if appropriate what kinds of classes prepared you for success in Vis Com? I went to New Prairie High School, and there weren’t any classes provided to me to prepare me for Vis Com. I was starting from scratch when I took my first photography class.
Who is your favorite artist and why? I would have to say that Pablo Picasso is my favorite artist because he wasn’t afraid to steer away from the normalities of his time, and because of that he produced some of the most beautiful work I have ever seen. Picasso knew how to look beyond an object
What is your favorite advertisement and why? I don’t think that I really have a favorite advertisement.
What is your favorite Adobe Application and how is it used? Adobe has a lot of great programs, and I would have to say that Photoshop is my favorite, mainly because I have the most experience with it, but I find it to be the easiest to navigate. I also am starting to have a love for illustrator because of the things you can do with it, but Photoshop is best when it comes to editing photographic images.
Do you have any advice for your fellow designers/artists? Life Quote? “Be the change you want to see in the world” -Ghandi-
Is there anything else you wish to share? An artist must compete with the world in order to be seen. It is easy to fall amongst someone else’s shadow and feel like the work that we make isn’t good enough, but sometimes our greatest ideas come to us in the dark.
